Alex Gidewon, not CIAA, is responsible for the Sheraton party...

First let me say I am a proud graduate of an ACC school. However, I am extremely proud of the CIAA, which boasts several HBCUs as part of its membership. These are the schools that educated massive numbers of African-Americans when we were not allowed to attend other public universities, and continue to produce outstanding scholars and scholar-athletes. For that, I am grateful.

This morning, I saw disturbing headlines from local Charlotte stations claiming that there was a shooting at a CIAA party. Having experienced the CIAA in three different cities with no violence, (Winston-Salem, Raleigh, and Charlotte before 2014), I was shocked.

I was not shocked that violence occurred...I was shocked that it happened at a CIAA sponsored event.

At least that's how the news initially reported it...

The headline initially read:

  1. Two people shot during CIAA party at crowded uptown hotel - WBTV ...

    www.wbtv.com/.../two-people-shot-during-ciaa-party-at-crowded...

    WBTV
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a shooting inside a crowded uptown hotel at about ... Two shot during party following CIAA at crowded uptown hotel.
Then they tried to clean it up:

Two shot during party following CIAA at crowded uptown hotel

Either way, the news and other media sources tried to link an unaffiliated party to a family friendly event. After reading the articles I realized this shooting didn't occur at a CIAA event...it occurred with the droves of profiteers who come into Charlotte during tourney weekend to pimp the CIAA name. They usually leave the conference to clean up the messes they created while here.

I don't just blame the news, I also blame the out-of-towners who roll through during CIAA weekend for the specific purpose of profiting off the Tournament's name. Then high-tailing it out of here when the bad stuff jumps off. Do y'all even donate money to the member schools or the conference itself?

This particular "crowded uptown hotel" party, was sponsored by an Atlanta party promoter and "club king", Alex Gidewon. Gidewon owns AGEntertainment, and throws parties that include big names like Jay-Z, Diddy, and T.I..

So, why is his name not mentioned in any of the headlines? It should be. Read his timeline below. He promoted this as a CIAA party, but I don't see it listed as a CIAA sanctioned event.

Nor was the Sheraton one of the CIAA sponsoring hotels: https://aws.passkey.com/g/20707182

It took me less than five minutes to find this information and I'm not a journalist....

*sidebar... The CIAA sued several party promoters last year for trademark infringement. So they have made attempts to quash these events usurping their image.
