Men vs Women: Birth Control

Man crying in pain
Side effects of birth control on men
Birth Control has been a controversial topic for decades. Some religions ban birth control outright. Conspiracy theorists warn against use of birth control as a genocidal attempt at population control (I swear, I had someone say this to me... weird...man....weird.)

None of that, however, touches the reaction of men to the side effects of male birth control in a recent clinical trial.

When we first learned about the invention of male birth control, women were excited!!

Somehow we forgot that men are a bunch of big babies who cannot take getting a splinter let alone dealing with bloating, mood swings, and the all around bad feelings that come with the side effects of some birth control.

Birth Control has great benefits like: aiding in family planning, balancing hormones, regulating menstrual cycles, etc. But the side effects of some can be enough to make you want to lose your mind.

Y'all know I talk to my close guy friends about everything...even some things people may find embarrassing to discuss betwixt the genders... I frankly don't care.

So for about two years now, I was on a low dose BC. Initially it was great: my cycle shortened and lightened up. But then...the BC started to turn on me. I started swelling, I gained weight, my blood pressure went up, I became extremely emotional, and my ankles virtually disappeared.

So my homeboy and I were talking one night:

Him:  I have to watch what I say to you. You've gotten all girly and sensitive on me all of a sudden.
Me:     Shut up, jerk.
Him:   I'm serious. You have changed...now I have to think about what I am saying before I say it. Getting all emotional and womanish.
Me:     I've always been womanish, fool. But, dude, do you know what it is? It's these dang hormones. I swear these BCs are making me crazy.
Him:    Ohhhhhhh.
Me:      Yo, I swear, I've become so weepy since I started taking these things...it's crazy. I swear they have me on edge.
Him:    You know what? I think that's what was wrong with *insert the name of his ex*. I swear whenever she started taking those things she was always snappy and emotional. Her whole mood would change all of a sudden. So yeah...I bet that's what did it.

This friend of mine also chided me when I posted my disappointment in how men reacted to the male birth control trial. He said women should have known better because men do not handle pain of any kind well.

I still think it's about time for the burden of family planning and general reproductive health to be distributed equitably among the sexes.

What do y'all think? Should men woman up and stay on birth control? Or do you understand their pain?
