Girls Trip Movie Review...kinda

girlstripmovie
Ryan, Lisa, Sasha and Dina have a girls trip to New Orleans
that tests their friendship and seals their bond.

Girls Trip is taking the box office and social media by storm. Some say it is like Hangover with Black Girl Magic sprinkled all over it.

Ryan (Regina Bell) is set to give the keynote address at Essence Festival in New Orleans. She decides that it is the prime opportunity to bring back the Flossy Posse, her crew from FAMU c/o 1995. The ladies have not seen each other in five years. There's the reformed party girl Lisa (Jada Pinkett-Smith), the journalist turned gossip blogger on a budget Sasha (Queen Latifah), and the wild child who never grew up Dina (Tiffany Haddish).

The ladies' first class trip to New Orleans takes some wild turns from the plane to the hotel to the hole in the wall club where they have a dance off that ends with the police being called. Throw in some wild rides, some old and new flames, some drank and a couple of magic tricks and you have a hilariously funny comedic trip through friends, foes and fun.

I won't spoil the movie for you, but I will tell you what I learned from it.

Things I learned from the movie

1. Larenz Tate will never age and always knows just the right words to say.

2. It takes all kinds to make a friendship flourish.

The ladies in the Flossy Posse represent the personalities that exist in every friend circle.

There is a cute little quiz on the movie's site that tells you which character you are... I took the quiz twice and kept coming up with Dina. I figure I got Dina because I am the one in my college crew whom will would throw hands.

Seriously, you have to have that loyal friend like Dina in your crew who wouldn't mind catching a charge. There also has to be one who would be there to bail her out (Ryan)... Then you have the one who would tell everybody about what went down (Sasha), and the nurturing one who will kumbaya and help you get your record expunged (Lisa).

3. Never book a hotel that is less than 3 stars

A scene in the movie reminds us all that bad decisions, even for good reasons, can get you in trouble...My college crew has a funny story about a budget inn that would have you rolling and remind you of a scene in this film that was spurred by Dina acting a fool. I happened not to be on this particular girls trip to an HBCU's homecoming. But one thing's for sure, and two thing's for certain...you will get nothing from a cheap hotel other than funny stories and bedbugs.

4. Sometimes you will have to just do stuff that you may be ashamed of in order to have fun.

All of my closest girl friends are professionals. Two work in the medical field and two of us are attorneys, but sometimes you just have to take the suits and scrubs off and be a little ratchet... Like go some place where no one knows you, put on a colorful wig and knuck if you buck.

5. We all have issues, and if you cannot lean on your friends there's no reason to have them.

Some friendships won't make it through your trying times or even your good times. That's okay. But true friends will make it through disagreements and hard times. When your friend is going through, you know it no matter what front they put on. Being a friend, sometimes means you have to ignore the "front" and hold your girl down. The Flossy Posse has to get through tough issues with each other and tough issues in their lives. When your girls have your back, no matter what, it doesn't matter how distant you are, when you get back together everything falls in line. The tears, the fears, the crazy and the fun.
