Aasha Davis talks being Racey and having guy friends

Aasha Davis plays Rayshanicia Jones.
the Unwritten Rules is all about Racey's plight in corporate
America.

I work in corporate America as well as in private practice. (Yes...I burn the candle at both ends sometimes.)

So the Unwritten Rules speaks to me! I love this web series. Rayshanicia aka Racey (forgive me for spelling this wrong...lol)... goes through everything I've gone through at work! Except for the name. I have a very resume friendly name.

Anyway Aasha Davis plays Racey Jones. Aasha has appeared on several prime time television shows including Gilmore Girls, Friday Night Lights, Grey's Anatomy, etc.

I decided to reach out to her to learn more about her role in the series. We communicated during the holidays.

Me: I randomly found the Unwritten Rules while  surfing YouTube during my break from TV. You play Racy on the Unwritten Rules...is Racy an extension of your personality or just a character you play?

Aasha:  Wow, we're so lucky you found us!!  Racey is a character I play, but she is so familiar to me because she reminds me of so many people that I love.  The web series is based on a book written by Kim Williams called "40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule: The Diary of a Nigger, Negro, Colored, Black, African-American Woman."

Me: I find a lot of the episodes extremely funny and very familiar. Which episode could you relate to most?

Aasha:  That's so great to hear. Thank you!!  Ugh!  That's tough!!!, there are three episodes that I especially feel connected to.  I moved around a lot growing up so Episode 1., "The First Day" brings back some of the feelings I had whenever I started a new school where I was in the minority of the minorities and felt like I stuck out like a hypothetical creature.

This episode reminded me of my blog "Don't Touch My Hair"

Me: You've acted in TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Friday Night Lights, as well as Independent works like the Unwritten Rules, Husbands and Pariah. Has there been any noticeable differences in the way the productions take place? If so what we're they?

Aasha: the Unwritten Rules is like 8 people in a room, with Kim Williams the creator making lunch and conducting several other jobs on her own.  Husbands and Pariah were also very intimate and family like but with a substantial crew of support. Then there's most of the TV networks that have it all and the level of comfort is pretty intense (and awesome). But what they all have in common is that it's always been fun and exciting.

Me:  the Unwritten Rules takes place in a work environment for the most part. Will there ever be any episodes dealing with office place romance?

Aasha: Hmmmm....lol!  We'll see… Kim has some fun and daring ideas for a Season 2. We really love the interaction with all the fans and are launching a campaign on Indiegogo to return this year (http://www.indiegogo.com/theunwrittenrules) for another season.  I can't watch Kim Williams work herself this year like she had to for Season 1.

Craig and Racey

Me: Episode 8, is where Racy meets her new coworker, Craig. Craig and Racy become fast friends. My blog was started because of my friendships with guys. Did you have guy friends growing up? What were those friendships like?

Aasha: Definitely!! One of my closest friends is a guy. Our families spend most Thanksgivings together.  We pick on each other a lot but we have each other's back and we've remained really good friends for many years.

Me: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours!!

Aasha: My pleasure!! Happy New Year and the same to you and yours!!
