Birthday Countdown: Day 17

Okay, so I missed Day 18 because I fell asleep and did not blog... I'll give you a lil info about  what I did at 18.

When I turned 18, I was a senior in high school. I was co-editor of my school paper, worked, was president and/or vice president of some clubs...had already quit  playing basketball. Was sifting through college scholarship offers from Ivy League schools, with my only college choice being UNC Chapel Hill. I literally had offers for half tuition or more scholarships from Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Duke, and MIT. Sometimes I do wonder if my life would have been different had I chosen one of those schools.

But I'm happy with the choice I made and would not have wanted to go anywhere else.

Anyway...it's Day 17

Today is Day 17

At 17 years old...

I was a second semester junior in high school. I never really celebrated my birthday a lot. Maybe a cake and a card. That was about it. Shortly after I turned 17, I flew to DC for a week to participate in Presidential Classroom. I flew around the country a good bit that year for competitions and stuff. This was the first year I hadn't played basketball.  I had blown out my knee in basketball camp the summer prior and chose academics over sports.

My roommate: Was my younger sister. And when I was in DC: Three girls...one from Puerto Rico, one from Mississippi and I cannot remember where the third one was.

My crew: I had the same friends I'd had since elementary and middle school.

I was dating: Well...my dad had a no  boys allowed rule...but...I can't remember...

I dressed: Like a boy with some girly touches. My go to store was Maurices.

My attitude: Was studious and quick tempered...I was focused on getting ready for college.

My Family: Saw me everyday, but mostly at night after 10. I worked and had a schedule that purposefully kept me away from home.

Present day...today I spent some time with my colleagues making business plans for next year. Oddly...as my male colleague walked me back to my car, we experienced "walking while Black". Two big burly non-Black guys were walking towards us.  One stared us down with an ugly grimace. He stopped...pushed his friend away from us, and then put his arms out as though he was protecting his friend from us. We were somewhat shocked and confused.

Here we are..two attorneys...walking with laptops, iPads and briefcases...yet this dude felt threatened by us enough to make  an exaggerated defensive move.

Anyway, chile!

My  favorite web series, Roomie  Lover Friends came back tonight! It was great!
