Happy Homecoming UNC

It has been a very long time since I graduated college. The years seemed to fly by. Today is our Homecoming at UNC, and I hate that I will miss it. It was easier to go when I still lived in the area.

It was also easier when I worked a regular 9-5 versus what I do now. But alas, let me give you some of my fondest memories from my time at UNC.

Fall Fest was the biggest introduction to life at UNC. I remember my first one, and it was quite entertaining. For some reason, the biggest thing I remember is the bright orange t-shirt that read "Caution: students at play" (I still have it...) and Shammond Williams singing like an old man in a country church up on stage.

Never in life had I ever experienced anything as hilariously funny as Halloween on Franklin Street. The creativity behind some of the costumes was beyond anything you could imagine.

I have seen Moses walking with tablets, people with tires around them that read "Flipstone" instead of Firestone, reproductive organs that functioned (you'd have to have seen it to understand what I mean...smh lol), and various other incarnations of the wild imaginations of the young and old alike.

I only dressed up for Halloween once on Franklin Street...and yes I have pics, but no I will not post them.

Football at Kenan

Okay, so I only went to one football game my freshman year. It happened to be the year we were undefeated going into the Florida State game. Let me tell you, I almost died at the game...okay...I'm exaggerating.

However, the crowd gathering outside of Kenan Stadium was so large that I could not walk, and got swept up as we moved in through the gates.

After freshman year, football games on Saturdays were a regular occurrence.

Late nights and early mornings

I really do not think anyone slept at UNC. We were up all the time. From the after party after the after parties, to just running around doing foolish stuff...like water gun battles across campus.

We made our way around campuses across the Triangle for meet n greets with folks from other campuses and the night life was always part of every week's festivities. Not to mention, running up to Franklin Street all late to celebrate great basketball seasons including beating Dook.

Plus Tobacco Roadhouse, Raleigh Live, Power Company and everything in between.

I had 8 am classes, and could make them off of two to four hours of sleep.

Then there was The Waffle House on 40/54 (disgusting), Pan Pan and Honeys in Durham (equally disgusting)... And lawd... TIME-OUT! I think your taste buds shift after hours.

Apple Chill

There was once this festival on Franklin Street that was very laid back and cool. It happened each spring as part of the arts festival for the town. (I had no idea this was the purpose...learned this later.)

Apple Chill was where you met folks from other campuses and around the way during daylight hours. The sad thing is it was totally destroyed when folks forgot it was supposed to be a laid back environment and tried to turn it into FreakNik or some foolishness.

Walking to Class

This does not seem like a fond memory at all. But it was. I lived on South Campus half of my time at UNC... And the trip from there to class was a hike! It kept me in shape though! Ha!

And then there were the brick monsters. Lawd! it was as if the earth would open up and this tiny piece of clay and mortar would become a villainous monstrosity readying itself to take you out in front of everyone on the yard.

I was captured once walking through the Pit...shaking my head. LOL

Oh and then there was the Blizzard of 2000. I sat on the wall outside of the UL with some folks as they watched people slip slide and bust their butts on the pavement! OMG...it was tragic!

Proud Alum

Anyway...those are a couple of my memories...there are so many more. I would not exchange my time at UNC for anything in the world. There were ups downs, heartaches and joys, lessons learned and friendships made.

I am a proud UNC Alum, the good, the bad, and the beautiful!
