Just a nobody

This was one of my favorite songs growing up.  Remember, I grew up in a very religious home.  Anyway, it tells the story of an old homeless man, who wanted to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  People would turn away from what he had to say because of his outside appearance.

Appearance can attract and repel.  As you walk through life, people will make first judgments on what they see externally. You may find yourself being drawn to, or pushed away from, people based solely on their exterior.  At some point, you should try to go beyond the labels, the surface, the superficial to see within a person.  You never know who that person is on the inside or what that person has gone through to change the outside.  This works in the positive and the negative.   As the saying goes, what looks good may not be good for you.  In the same respect, everything that looks of low value on the outside, may really be invaluable to you.

As I walk Uptown, I pass a lot of people along the way.  A number of homeless people catch my eye.  I always wonder what took them there.  I've volunteered at different shelters and what not overtime.  The stories are always unique.  But I always leave with a nugget of wisdom from the men I've spoken to.  I also watch the people in business suits walking by.  I like to look in their eyes to get a good visual... often wondering if they are doing what they want to do or what they have to do. I rarely believe the first image I get of a person, whether good or bad. (I'm not saying that's a good thing LOL).  I also rarely believe who people TELL me they are...I wait to see who they SHOW me they are.  Sometimes the two things match...sometimes they don't.

You know a lot of times people will overlook someone who doesn't have the visual appearance of success or wisdom.  They will ignore people who don't meet certain standards of beauty or attraction. People assign value to things that are really valueless in the grand scheme of things.  At the end of the day...it really doesn't matter what you have on the outside if you have nothing of substance/value on the inside.

So the people you believe are SOMEBODY could just be empty shells putting on a front... And the NOBODIES of the world may carry with them enough substance to fortify the world.
