Luniz caused my high school paper to get shut down

Back in the day, I was co-editor of my school newspaper. Somehow, I forgot all about my involvement with writing.  Anyway...I listened to Pandora radio today and Luniz came on.

Then it all came back to me. Ha! Luniz had this song called "I got five on it" that blasted all over everywhere in the late 90s. It was also the "corner boys" anthem...

So, one day when one of my journalism classmates approached me about doing an article on the song and the drug wave that had hit the area, I thought it was a cool idea. (Hey Kara!)

She used this picture of a little cartoon character that had his middle finger up with "I got 5 on it" as a tagline. Well, my journalism teacher trusted our judgment, and the paper went to print.

Once some grown people got hold of the paper, hot off the presses...we were hauled in to explain our allowing such a controversial piece to run.  They then shut down our newspaper.

We were ticked off. As I think back, I still feel the grown folks were wrong. Had they let us explore the topic further, who knows where it would have gone.

The article merely alerted everyone to the issues of drug dealing and drug abuse happening in our town. It was just done in a pretty dope way. (Pun intended.) After seeing how drugs and drug dealing impacted our community over the years...I wonder how a different reaction to that little expose' might have changed some things. Maybe not at all... we'll never know.
