CIAA 2011 Survival Guide--YBBG style

Uptown Charlotte
I know most of y'all will look for reckless partying and random acts of salaciousness during CIAA.  You know...the basics of acting a monkey fool and other acts of random ridiculousness.   But for those of you who want to attend one of the greatest events to take place each year, and still be able to show your face later (and keep your man or woman, without any instances of domestic violence...)...Here is a guide for you!

NUMBER 1: Know what the CIAA is... I mean some of you really think it is just another black bikers' week, freaknik, or something... Okay...no! Read here for the storied history of the oldest Black sports conference in the country.  That means there are actually basketball games going on during the tournament...

NUMBER 2Have a budget... Now you do not want to come to Charlotte, ball out of control, have your swagger on a hundred, thousand, trillion and go home to a foreclosure/eviction notice...and have to duck and dodge the take back man... Frontin' ain't fun, when you have to go back to reality. If you cannot afford it this year...don't worry, there will be other times. Stay your arse home and get your money right!

NUMBER 3: Be Responsible...  That means have any necessary items available for any unforeseen circumstances (i.e., a designated driver, some Trojans, some pocket change, some clean draws, a back up plan, a friend who will keep you from going to jail, an emergency contact, hand sanitizer...you know...).  Have a place to stay. Look don't come here and have to sleep in your car...phone a friend...or end up trying to get room at the shelter... Get a room! Check out http://www.hotels.com/ or something.

NUMBER 4:  Know where to go... Seriously some people throw the worst parties.  They are overcrowded and dysfunctional.  Oh and if you get there late, they do not care if you had a ticket or not...you will not get in.  Check out both Day parties and regular parties.  There are other things you can check out in the city too, if this is your first time here. For info on parties and goings on check out http://www.onixlink.com/, http://www.power98fm.com/, http://www.v1019.com/ , http://www.jrkentertainment.net/, http://www.ciaaparty.com/, http://www.mazentertainment.net/, http://www.ciaatournament.org/, etc.

NUMBER 5: Party with a purpose...  By all means, GET IT IN! But also remember there will be some very influential people in the city during this time.  You may very well run into your next employer, business partner, or client. Have your A game with you.  Remember most business deals are made on the proverbial golf course...who's to say CIAA 2011 can't be your Augusta?

NUMBER 6: Be fly...but don't be stupid... I don't know if any of you have ever attended an HBCU...but one thing I can tell you about most folks at HBCUs...everyday on the yard is a fashion show...LOL...and believe me that does not end AFTER the college days are over.  So get your fly together before you come bustin up in here lookin to' down? OK! That means your line up must be fresh, your wigs must be seamless, and your gear most definitely has to be on point. (That does not mean expensive...no no no...remember that you can look like a million bucks without spending a million!!)..And if you decide to just dress a crazy mess...do not be surprised if your picture will be splayed all across the interwebs as a fashion FAIL!  Also ladies...by all means stunt on 'em with the high high heels...but keep a pair of ballerina slippers in your purse... trust me...you'll thank me later.

NUMBER 7: Know your way around... If you are staying on the outskirts of Uptown, you may want to try different means of transportation to get into Center City.  Charlotte has several modes of transportation including buses, Lynx, taxis, etc. Traffic is a hot mess when you come into Uptown for CIAA. Basically you'll be at traffic lights for a long time. So find a lite rail station, park and ride into town.  For info on Charlotte transportation go here. It costs to park! So don't get your car towed, by thinking you can just park it in an open lot. There are pay stations in these parking areas. They range from 2.50 to 7.00 flat, and 2-3 bucks an hour. There will of course be special event parking...so they may either lower or jack up prices. Go here for parking info.

NUMBER 8: Everyone here is single... Okay look...let's be completely honest...quite a few of the "single" folks who say they are single, did not bother to tell their spouse or significant other before they came to the tourney.  So look out for tell-tell signs that the person you are talking to actually isn't as free as he or she says.  First of all if they give you the bbm pin and not the phone number...you know good and well they are not open for business. If they seem like they are hiding out in public...you'll see it in the eyes and the creep-like level of speech... If they are not with a group of folks... just two of them rolling together...and one is trying to holla and the other is all laid back...looking nervous.

NUMBER 9: Get some rest...  Please do not fall asleep on one of the leather or velvet or suede or whatever couches in one of these spots... If you do, you may wake up missing a few things... And that ain't what you want.  And don't drink like liquor will not exist tomorrow. You want to enjoy your time, not end up in the hospital blacking out and carryin' on.  So give the blue drinks, brown dranks, and all all that jazz a rest at some point. You know your limit.

NUMBER 10: If you ain't from the East side... Aight now...I know you're all hard and hood and all that jazz...but if it ain't your hood, you better stay your arse out of it... Y'all saw the welcoming Wacka Flocka got last week...look don't be on First 48 'cause you think you're tough... Charlotte is a peaceful place if you stay in your lane...but trust and believe these folks 'round here will get with you...just give it an opportunity.  Be respectful and stay out of the East side...unless you know somebody over there!! hahahahahahaaa!!

Take a peak at last year's event below!
