I am so excited! One of the Brands YBBG worked with in the past, Front Porch Ice cream, is mixing two of my favorite things: Food and Education. I received an invite to the Second Annual Front Porch Flavor Competition with Johnson & Wales, the culinary school.

Johnson & Wales University Teams Up with Consumer Product Goods Producers to Innovate Recipes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 15, 2013) – Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Charlotte Campus is leading the forefront of culinary innovation with Front Porch® Carolina Churned Ice Cream and Vedgee™ Fresh from the Garden Tortillas through student competitions, which will be judged at formal events on April 26.

“Our relationships with these big brands open up great opportunities for our students to be recognized,” said Assistant Professor, Chef Timothy Cameron.

The Second Annual Front Porch New Flavor Competition looks to JWU students to find the next Southern-inspired recipe for their ice cream brand. Of the submitted recipes, ten finalists will be selected to create their ice cream recipes. For the final judging event, each finalist will be serving his or her ice cream creation. Judges and media guests will be able to mingle and sample entries. All attendees will vote for their favorite to determine the People’s Choice Award winner.

“We love this opportunity to get fresh ideas from the students,” said Michael Werran, production manager at Mooresville Ice Cream Company and Front Porch. “Translating the recipes into mass production is the hardest part of the process and these students are educated about the real-world application of this contest.”

As part of the launch of Vedgee Tortillas, a newly created grocery product, Easy Foods, Inc. has partnered with JWU to incorporate Vedgee Tortilla recipe creation into the curriculum of two spring courses: Culture and Food (Sociology 2020) and Nutrition and Sensory Analysis (CUL 1375). Students have been tasked with developing recipes that uniquely utilize tortillas. Of the submitted recipes, six finalists will be selected to create and present tapas-styled versions of their recipe for a formal tasting event, to be attended and judged by Vedgee VIPs. In preparation for the final tasting, students will also attend a practice session that will be open to interested local media outlets.

“This program is a fascinating way to connect our tortillas with the innovation of these up-and-coming students at Johnson and Wales,” said Easy Foods Inc. President, William Isaias.

Both competitions contribute to the excitement of young, culinary minds at JWU. Winning students will receive monetary prizes from the sponsors, Mooresville Ice Cream Company (Front Porch) and Easy Foods, Inc. (Vedgee). Front Porch finalists will receive prizes totaling $2,600. The six Vedgee finalists will receive $2,250 total in scholarships. Amounts vary based on final placement.

“I am happy to be a sounding board as the students work on the next great flavor of the South,” said Assistant Professor, Chef John Maas.
