Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor review from YBBG

Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor hit theaters on March 29th of this year. I did not have an opportunity to see it then, but could not wait to see it after viewing the trailer. The trailer was beyond intriguing.

I am a Tyler Perry fan. We go way back to when people were bootlegging the Madea plays and selling the VHS tapes. I have loved most of his movies, though I have not seen them all.

To this day, A Family that Preys is his best work in my opinion. But this?

Grade: D+

  • No character development
  • Confusing storytelling
  • Disjointed plot development

The Plot:

Young mid-twenties couple from the Bible belt move to DC. Brice (husband) wants to own a pharmacy. Judith (wife) wants to be a marriage counselor.

Growing up in a small town, they have very religious values, but being thrown into a world where temptation is constantly on display is difficult. Couple that with holding onto pains and family secrets that are festering at the core that causes the wife to question her own relationship with God, and you have a combustible situation.

In walks the answer to her prayers, Harley. He offers the attention, encouragement and support Judith longs for, and has the means of providing her so much more. Harley is honest, forthright, passionate and trouble with a capital T.

Romance strikes in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people. The damage it brings is what drives the movie. A twist at the end, leaves the good guy winning.

My issues:

I liked all of the characters. I liked the plot. Tyler always brings a message with his movies, and I dig that deeply.

But the movie was lacking on character development. I did not feel a connection with any of the characters. Things happened in the movie that had little to no explanation. I felt no love between the husband and the wife. So when things fell apart, it was just like... ummm okay...

The movie was somewhat put together like a jacked up patchwork quilt. When new information came out, it had little to no tie to anything else. I didn't know anything about Harley's background until Judith came at him sideways about it. I had no earthly idea that Judith was fatherless, until she and her mother argued about it.

Some of the scenes were spicy, but there was no intrigue. The movie was entirely too short and it seemed to have left out important pieces.

Also...how come Brandy's character didn't age in the end? Ummmm... I couldn't have been the only one to notice.

The Plus:

The acting was good. And Kim K really was not garbage as people claimed.

CONCLUSION
Alas, you should go see it for yourself. My best friend saw it before me and loved it.

Have you seen Temptation? What were your thoughts?
